How to Read Sports Betting Odds
Sports betting odds can be a bit overwhelming for those looking to understand the industry. The variety of formats confusing.
Odds, in gambling, are the expected payoff to stake. In sports betting, this ratio always operates on a “to one” basis. This means you get your bet back, plus the payoff if you win. If, for example, you wager an $11 bet to win $10, the book gives you $21 if victorious.
Betting odds are displayed in various styles around the world. In the United States, oddsmakers use the “American” system. It employs an odds expression designating return comparative to a 100-unit base figure. A minus (-) before the number indicates what the bettor has to pay to win $100, while a plus (+) is the amount returned for every $100 one stakes.
The calculating formula for American odds are as follows:
Negative = (100/Odds) x Stake
Positive = Odds x (Stake/100)
