The Mets’ Jacob deGrom (-150) and Nationals ace Max Scherzer (+120) are neck and neck in the race to claim the 2018 NL Cy Young Award according to oddsmakers (BetOnline).
Scherzer, the second preseason betting choice at +200 odds behind the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw (+150), is looking to claim the honors for a third straight year. Hall of Fame southpaw Randy Johnson was the last NL pitcher to win the Cy Young more than twice in succession (1999-2002). DeGrom, meanwhile, is seeking his first triumph.
DeGrom began the season the sixth betting selection at +2500 odds, seeing his price drop steadily in light of a stellar season. The Mets hurler has surrendered three or fewer runs in 23 of 24 starts this season, compiling a paltry 1.71 ERA in the process. DeGrom’s win-loss record is a pedestrian 8-7 thanks to lackluster run support (3.76 per game). Zack Greinke, currently the seventh betting favorite at +1800 odds, is the only NL pitcher to close out the year with a lower ERA (1.66) since 1996.
Scherzer, 16-5 with a 2.11 ERA, leads the league with 234 strikeouts. The right-hander is trailed on the board by Phillies phenom Aaron Nola (+900), who like deGrom has yielded three or fewer runs in 23 of 25 outings. The former first-round selection sports a NL-leading .824 winning percentage (14-3). Philly surrenders just 2.92 runs per game when Nola takes the pill.
