MLB Betting Tips: Thursday, August 9

Sports Betting Resources’ best MLB bets, picks, and tips for Thursday, August 9, 2018 feature the Mariners at Astros and Dodgers at Rockies.

Mariners at Astros (-152)

Opening Line: -145, Houston
Opening Total: 7 (-110)
First Pitch: 8:10 p.m. ET

James Paxton (9-5, 3.51 ERA) vs. Justin Verlander (11-6, 2.19 ERA)

Starter Justin Verlander dominates AL West rivals since joining the Astros, the division leaders going 12-3 SU in 15 starts. The right-hander and staff allow just 1.93 runs per contest, surrendering more than a trio in just a pair of contests. The UNDER is 10-5 overall. The combined final score is 6.5 versus an average 8.4 total.

The Mariners have dropped three of James Paxton’s last four starts while the veteran southpaw deals with on-again, off-again lower back stiffness. He’s worked 7.0 innings in each of his last two outings and looks to be 100 percent. Paxton allows 3.4 runs per game in his career as an underdog coming off a loss as the betting favorite. He is 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA in his last five starts against Houston. Look for a competitive effort here.

The UNDER is 39-11-2 in all AL games with a total south of 7.5 in 2018, the wager returning a whopping 46.9 percent profit.

Best Bet: UNDER 7

Dodgers (-125) at Rockies

Opening Line: -127, Los Angeles
Opening Total: 10.5 (-120)
First Pitch: 8:40 p.m. ET

Ross Stripling (8-3, 2.68 ERA) vs. Tyler Anderson (6-4, 4.05 ERA)

The UNDER is 28-11-1 (71.8 percent) when Los Angeles squares off against a left-handed starter in 2018. They average 3.8 runs per game; 4.1 in 22 outside the pitching-friendly confines of Dodger Stadium. Strong arms help. A 6.7 final tally stays 1.2 runs shy of a 7.9 average total overall. Buyer beware, however, as L.A. dinged 11 runs and gifted 8 against Tyler Anderson and Co. on June 1 at Rockies Stadium.

The UNDER is 14-3-1 when Stripling takes the pill against a club scoring fewer than 4.3 runs per game in its last 10. The L.A. staff yields 3.0 runs per contest with 10 coming on the road. The Rockies average 3.4 not including their Wednesday afternoon closer against the Pirates.

Bettors have seen the UNDER cash in 12 of 15 career starts for Anderson hosting teams with a .500 record or greater in Colorado. There has been a pair of pushes. An 8.1 average score is coming up well shy of a 10.9 total. Anderson has worked 12 quality starts in this spot, including his last four in a row. L.A. is guaranteed to enter the series hitting the mark, sitting at 58-57 prior to its Wednesday night showdown with the Athletics.

Best Bet: UNDER 10.5
